Background

      With the increase in capacitors on a package, throughput for component placement is greatly affected. It has become a production limiter. A possible solution for this problem is the purchase of more pick-and-place machines. However, this solution is not implemented because of the machines’ capital cost.

      The conventional solution has an arm that travels back and forth between the passive component feeders and the substrate to pick and place passive components one at a time. The placement phi unit (PPU) with a single nozzle is the actuator used for picking, aligning, and mounting the component (see Figure 1).

General description

      The disclosed method is a dual-nozzle design with the ability to simultaneously pick up two components and place them to the designated pad location on a substrate. The key element is a dual nozzle, twin bulk feeder pick-and-place machine.
