Description

              The disclosed method is an interface for a standard synchronization state machine with a 3.125-Gbps serializer/deserializer (ser/des) device. The ser/des device receives a serial data stream and sends 10-bit parallel data to a Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS). The received data stream may not be synchronized to the correct 10-bit code group boundary so the ser/des device must adjust to the code-group alignment. The synchronization process uses the comma pattern in the received data stream to perform code-group alignment. The ser/des device continues to shift the code group alignment by one bit until a comma pattern is detected.

              The comma pattern is a unique pattern that shows up in valid codes so when the comma pattern is detected, the 10-bit code group is aligned to a valid boundary. The ser/des device requires an input pulse to cause it to shift the code group alignment by one bit. The disclosed method creates this input pulse. The synchronization process is performed independently for each data lane. Therefore, the disclosed method is duplicated for each data lane.
