SUMMARY:

  This device uses two or more "embedded opti- cal reference marks," in the hardware, to calculate the relationship between world coordinates, (mils, microns), to camera coordinates, (pixels), during automated vision inspection applications.

  The reference marks are of a known size and location, (measured and verified), distance from each other (ref dimension "A" see Figure l), and from the surface that the device being inspected will rest on (ref. dimension "B" see Figure 1).

  Each time an image is acquired and processed the "reference marks" are used by the inspection software as a gage to measure the "lead seating plane" to "package plane:' lead coplainarity, and several different parameters for lead spacing.

  By using these fixed references the software application is self-calibrating requiring no initial special setup and periodic recalibration.
