INTRODUCTION

  Most of the numeric pagers in the market use seven, eight, or nine segment LCDs to display received messages. Most numeric pagers adopt a Sequential Read approach to read the received messages in its memory. That is, if there are twenty messages in the pager and each message consists of three screens, then to read the 20th message, the user needs to step through 19 X 3 = 57 screens in order to reach the 20th message. This method of reading messages sequentially is ineffective and time consuming.

THE PROBLEM

  This invention intends to improve the ease of reading messages in a segmented display pager via Selective Read. While selective read is common in Alphanumeric pagers with a dot matrix LCD, it is not found in numeric segmented pagers. For seg- mented displays the following limitations have made it difficult to support selective read:

1. The lack of inverse video capability in a seg- mented display makes it difftcult to display the location of the cursor position.

The limited symbols that the segmented dis- play can support make it difftcult to represent the message status (such as read, unread, lock and unlock etc.)

The limited number of characters that could be displayed on the twelve character seg- mented display make it difftcult to support the full status screen for pagers having thir- teen or more messages,

  In addition, the limitation in segmented displays make it difficult to display the message status infor- mation on one screen. The information is usually conveyed in separate screens and the user needs to scroll through these screens using at least a few keystrokes.

THE INVENTION

  This invention explores all the useful segments available in a segmented display and, together with annunciators, overcomes the difftculties in selective read for segmented displays. An example of a Turbo

status screen is shown in Figure 1:

a. The dash on the top segment represents the location of the cursor when it is moving.
