Abstract

This invention broadly relates to melt flow control in an injection molding system. In particular, this invention relates to an apparatus for use in a hot runner manifold melt channel for varying the pressure drop. The restriction is in the form of a translatable valve pin housed within the melt channel of the manifold melt channel. An advantage of this invention is that the melt is subjected to a relatively low shear rate increase, and thus less material degradation as the pressure drop occurs over a rather long melt channel length.

Field of the Invention

       This invention broadly relates to melt flow control in
an injection molding system. In particular, this invention
relates to an apparatus for use in a hot runner manifold melt
channel for varying the pressure drop.

Summary of the Invention

       The primary objective of the invention is to provide
an adjustable restriction in a hot runner melt channel to vary
the pressure drop.

       An advantage of this invention is that the melt is
subjected to a relatively low shear rate increase, and thus less
material degradation as the pressure drop occurs over a rather
long melt channel length.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

       The proposed apparatus installed in a hot runner
manifold melt channel includes an adjustable restriction to vary
the pressure drop. The restriction is in the form of a
translatable valve pin housed within the melt channel of the
manifold melt channel. Attached sketch shows an idea to obtain
variable pressure drop in a hot runner.

This technology could be used as in the center-plate
of a multi-mold setup to control flow towards each mold cavity.

It could also be used in any hot runner to control
flow to individual valve gates.
