ON-LINE IMAGE ACQUISITION SYSTEM

by Joseph O'Keeffe

INTRODUCTION

The process step at which defects occur on a SMT line is often difficult to identify. This idea applies to offpad parts and missing parts.

It would be very useful if there was a system which could look at the boards at various stages along the line allowing the source of the defect to be traced.

There is no known system available which takes images of boards, tracks them according to some identification number and allows the images to be retrieved once a defect has been found at the end of the line.

DESCRIPTION

Operation in three stages to help investigation of where a defect occurred on the production line.

1. A picture is taken at each process stage. This is activated when the pallet activates the sensor.

  2. The picture is assigned to a tracking number by decoding the tracking number which is on the barcode on the pcb. These pictures are then stored in the database according to the tracking number.

  3. Once a defect has been found at the end of the line, the operator/analysis technician scans the barcode on the pcb. This brings the various images which were taken of the pcb to the screen. He/she can then examine these images to investigate where the error occurred during production.

CONCLUSION

An image collection would be positioned at var- ious positions along the production line. These posi- tions would be between the processes along the pro- duction line. The ima...
