EFFICIENT MESSAGE STORAGE THROUGH MESSAGE EDITING

by Jeffrey Chia and Upendra Samaratunge

INTRODUCTION

  Current pager designs only allow a user to either store a complete message and take up a pager's limited memory, or delete an existing page in memory. There is no feature available for the user to select and store useful parts of a message.

INVENTIVE FEATURE

  Adding a simple text editor that can copy, cut and paste increases usefulness of a pager and allow a user to maximize the limited memory of the pager. An example of simple text editing in a pager is illustrated in Figures 1 to 6.

  An edit menu is activated during a read process. While reading messages the user can choose to protect, delete, or edit a message through a menu. When an edit sub menu is selected, the user will be able to mark part of the message and perform cut,

copy of text of the message. The user can then paste text from the message in, for example, a new message slot, in an existing message, or a scheduler. There is also an escape option for the user to undo the edit if the user decides not to save the text edited.

POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS

The simple text editor in the pager provides for:

(1) editing of messages, telephone directory and scheduler;
(2) organizing and managing information from information service providers so that useful information is extracted and stored for future reference;
(3) shortening long messages to take up less memory; and
(4) creation of...
