AUTOMATIC ALERT FOR SPECIAL EVENTS

by Kuek Teck Hock and Sea Tee Yang

This article describes a feature for a pager to alert a user when special events, such as birthdays, public holidays, or document expiration dates occur or are forthcoming. When alerting the user, the pager also displays the events in a readable format on the pager's screen.

In addition to selecting the events for alerting, users can also select their individual preferences for the alerting, such as alert melodies, duration of alerts and information indicating the events.

Alerts for the events can be made different from normal alerts for indicating received pages. A programmable EEPROM is used to implement this feature and provides for an alert that consists of a sequence of three alert melodies. These alert melodies can be interchangeably selected for the alert. Total alert duration for the alert is also selectable.

Illustrated below are examples of information stored within the programmable EEPROM:

DATE OF ALERT : 3rd October TIME OF ALERT : 9.00am MESSAGE DISPLAY : Albert's birthday next week ALERT MELODIES

(selectable sequence) : Bell; bee; bird ALERT DURATION

(selectable duration) : 12 seconds

DATE OF ALERT : 10th October TIME OF ALERT : 8.OOam MESSAGE DISPLAY : Happy birthday to Albert ALERT MELODIES

(selectable sequence) : Bird; bell; bee ALERT DURATION

(selectable duration) : 21 seconds

Figure 1 is a flow-chart for implementing the above feature.
