Abstract

Secure Accessories provide Voice and Data Security to commercial Cellular Telephones by attaching externally to a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf cellular telephone, such as the Motorola" MicroTAC Elite" cellular telephone. Control and Data are passed to the Cellular Telephone through the Accessory port located at the bottom of the telephone. When the Accessory enters the secure mode of operation, the audio from the Cellular accessory port is intercepted, on both the transmit and receive sides, and is replaced with encrypted voice. The Cellular Telephone's internal Microphone and Earpiece are disabled when audio is routed in and out of the accessory port during Secure operation. Therefore, an additional Microphone and Earpiece must be provided by the Secure Accessory to enable voice communication. The apparatus of Figure 1 provides for this external Microphone and Earpiece as shown. The Microphone is enclosed within the Secure Accessory, and the Earpiece is rigidly attached, as shown, to the topside of the Secure Accessory.

The Cellular Telephone's internal Microphone and Earpiece are disabled when audio

is routed in and out of the accessory port during Secure operation.
