Accompanying this trend is the ever-present pressure to reduce manufacturing cycle time and increase associate safety within a firm.   As consumer electronic products continue to reduce in size, available real estate on printed circuit boards (PCBs) becomes increasingly valuable. Accompanying this trend is the ever-present pressure to reduce manufacturing cycle time and increase associate safety within a firm. To combat these issues, a new contact design and singulation method- ology was derived and is detailed in this article.

  The contact methodology improves on the common "bridged" contact design. A bridged contact is a contact which begins as a single piece, and then becomes multiple contacts once the "bridge" is singulated and discarded. A sample of the common bridged contact design is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.

  In contrast, the new design methodology for a PCB, combining bridge singulation with the PCB bridged contact is shown in Figure 3. Significant singulation, and utilizing array material as a vehicle features in the design include: moving the contact to dispose of the singulated contact bridge.
