INTRODUCTION

  Light sources for a light diffuser can be light emitting diodes (LEDs) or incandescent lamps. In battery-powered devices, power consumption of such LEDs or lamps during light-up can be signiti- cant. Described in this article is a fluorescent light guide reflector that improves light dispersal in a light ditbtser to minimize power consumption.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION

  The fluorescent light guide reflector is fabricated by coating a polymeric layer with a fluorescent compound. Such a fluorescent polymeric layer

replaces a white polymeric reflector of a conven- tional light diffuser. For example, a transflector that is typically beneath a lower polariser of a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel can be replaced by the fluorescent polymeric layer.

  Shown in Figure 1 is an isometric view of a light diffuser having the fluorescent light guide reflector. The diffisor has a polished surface while its bottom surface having fine gratings as shown in Figure 2. At one end of the diffuser is a single embedded incandescent lamp whose leads protrude for soldering onto a circuit board. The gratings are used to disperse the light evenly.
