  Currently on many cars, it is necessary to take your eyes off the road in order to adjust the volume of the car radio. This is a safety hazard, so it would be beneficial to have the volume of the car radio automatically adjusted for the driver.

  As shown in Figure 1, when the radio powers up, there will be an initial reading taken of the noise level in the car and the radio volume level. The noise level reading will be taken by a noise sensor located in the headrest of the driver's seat and trans- mitted to the radio, which will compensate for the radio volume level to determine the background noise level. The difference between the background noise level and the radio volume level is called the listening level. The listening level is the level at which the driver will hear the radio output. It will be kept constant by adjusting the radio volume level as the background noise level changes.

  The noise sensor needs to be small in order to fit unobtrusively in the headrest, so it will not be responsible for much of the work needed for automatic adjustment. It will only send a reading if the volume level of the combined sounds heard at the sensor changes by more than five decibels since the last reading was sent. In addition, a reading will be sent no more than once per second to minimize radio volume fluctuations. Both of these parameters will be adjustable.
