Abstract

In the latest generation of alphanumeric pager products, a new feature, 'Post A Note' has been offered. Using this feature, the user can manually create a canned message, and then assign to that message, a numerical indicator. If that designator is subsequently received, the canned message infor- mation is displayed. The user creates this canned message by using the pager keys to scroll through numbers, letters and then advancing forward to the next character of the message.

POST A NOTES

In the latest generation of alphanumeric pager products, a new feature, 'Post A Note' has been offered. Using this feature, the user can manually create a canned message, and then assign to that message, a numerical indicator. If that designator is subsequently received, the canned message infor- mation is displayed. The user creates this canned message by using the pager keys to scroll through numbers, letters and then advancing forward to the next character of the message.

POST A NOTE ISSUES

While this is a significant step forward in the utility of canned messages, there are a number of issues.

* The creation of a entry in the 'Post A Note' direc- tory is involved. A high number of button pushes is required to enter a message in to the pager.

* The incorporation this feature tends to increase number of buttons required in the pager. It increases the complexity of the user interface and can increase the cost of the unit.

* Products are getting smaller. This will naturally limit the number and size of buttons on the pager.

CREATING POST-A-NOTES FROM RECEIVED MESSAGES

As an alternative to the standard 'Post A Note,' the user can create a "Post-A-Note" using any previously received messages.
