Abstract

The use of a hall effect sensor to develop a voltage that corresponds to a specific magnetic field strength allows for the radio's Option Select A/D to be used to read the accessory type connected with- out the need for an impedance network. In addition, for the specific Option Select schemes used by newer radios such as Astro and Jedi, this invention allows for the elimination of one of the two binary contacts and associated protection circuitry in the accessory and radio.

  The use of a hall effect sensor to develop a voltage that corresponds to a specific magnetic field strength allows for the radio's Option Select A/D to be used to read the accessory type connected with- out the need for an impedance network. In addition, for the specific Option Select schemes used by newer radios such as Astro and Jedi, this invention allows for the elimination of one of the two binary contacts and associated protection circuitry in the accessory and radio.

  Refer to the following Proposed Block Diagram. The accessory will be required to incorpo- rate a magnet specific to its accessory type and a

hall effect sensor, so that the hall effect sensor will be able to generate a corresponding voltage output to the Option Select A/D input. The magnetic field sensed would be reflected from the radio casting or associated shielding. Each different fixed field strength magnet type corresponds to a different accessory type, or one specific magnetic field strength magnet could be placed closer or further away from the sensor to achieve the same effect.

  In summary, the Hall Effect Sensor scheme is the magnetic equivalent of sensing a varying impedance to determine the accessory type.
