Abstract

In certain applications of ttunked systems (utility companies, for example), users will use their radio during specific times of the day and for a specific talkgroup. Typically, this time would be associated with their work shift (e.g. 8 am to 5 pm).

TIME-BASED RESTRICTED ACCESS TO A TRUNKED SYSTEM

by Mark Zollner and Daniel McDonald

1 PROBLEM

In certain applications of ttunked systems (utility companies, for example), users will use their radio during specific times of the day and for a specific talkgroup. Typically, this time would be associated with their work shift (e.g. 8 am to 5 pm).

After the work shift is over, the user no longer needs to be involved in any communication that goes on in the talkgroup. Furthermore, if the user leaves the radio on, then the radio would need to be involved in any calls for that talkgroup and resources would have to be allocated for this.

This would result in unnecessary waste of resources, especially if the user is the only member of the talkgroup affiliated at some site since a channel would be allocated for this. In a multizone system, the resource could be an interzone path.

2 SOLUTION

A new method is proposed that assigns a time interval with a trunked system user. This interval(s) would determine when a particular user cati have access to the system or the system's features and capabilities.

For example, a user's configuration could be set up such that the user can use any site within a trunked system from 8 am to 5 pm. After that time, resources will not be allocated for the user, even if the radio is afftliated to the talkgroup where the call is going on.

This method can be extended to other features such as private calls, interco...
