Rotary Cutting Evaluation Of A Polycoated Glassine Paper

Plain glassine paper is known for use in rotary press converting.  Polyolefin extruded and compressed on one side or both sides of glassine paper is not a normally  used construction in rotary press cutting.  Since glassine paper is already cuttable by rotary tools, providing a polymeric coating (i.e., "polycoat") on one or both sides may be considered counter-intuitive as the polycoat layer(s) increases the overall compressibility and decreases cut performance.

A study was conducted to evaluate a polycoated glassine paper having a coating of silicone release on one or both outer surfaces (i.e., the outer surface of the polyolefin coating).  This construction included, but is not limited to, HDPE extruded on both sides of a 2 mil (0.002 inches) caliper glassine paper.  Release silicone chemistries included condensation-cured, solventless addition-cured, and solvent-coated addition-cured systems.  Other silicone release chemistries which could be used include UV-cured epoxy silicone systems.  This unique liner construction was used in the manufacture of acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives. 

The silicone release-treated, polycoated glassine paper was used as a primary liner in rotary press converting.  In such an operation it is desired to cleanly cut through a film backing (called a "facestock") and the adhesive layer down to the primary liner.  Slight to moderate penetration of the knife cut into the paper layer of the primary...
