METHOD OF PAGE TRAFFIC REDUCTION IN DISPATCH GROUP CALL

by Ognjen Redzic, Boris Spector and Naum Spektor

SYSTEM BACKGROUND

Local area call primarily supports communica- tions between users in the "local" service area. The system finds and includes in the call all members of the selected talkgroup who are located within the local service area.

Dispatch local group call in iDEN system fimc- tions as follows: subscriber unit (SU) initiates local group call in particular dispatch location area (DLA). DAP recognizes the DLA identifier (DLAI) and subsequently pages all the cells that have that DLAI assigned to them, either as primary, secondary or tertiary. DAP proceeds with pages when at least one subscriber with the same talk- group selected resides in this DLA.

PROBLEM

There is one particular case, however, that results in the waste of the system resources and may be improved. When there is no target SU in a given DLA, according to the current algorithm, DAP will

page the DLA nevertheless. The reason is following:

After receiving the group call request, DAP checks its internal counter for the particular DLAI to insure there is at least one subscriber registered with the given talkgroup. If the counter is greater than zero, DAP proceeds with pages.

However, when the only SU registered is the originator of the call, the counter will also be greater than zero (countet=l) and DAP will page the originator. In this case the call is unsu...
