1 INTRODUCTION

  There is no method of entering message triggers into existing pagers without requiring a cumber- some user interface. What is needed is a method of sending the triggers to the pager and bypassing the user interface. These triggers allow the user to select data to be monitored from a web interface, direct connect PC, or an IRDa interface. These external data entering devices will make it much more convenient for the user to select and monitor message triggers.

2 BACKGROUND

  Pagers have traditionally only allowed the data received to be viewed. With the coming of infomla- tion services, the user will not find it practical to read every message which is received. A method is needed which will alert the user only to messages which contain data in which the user is interested.

3 PROPOSED IMPLEMENTATION

This is a method whereby a trigger is created

which will act upon an incoming message. The trigger can be created by reception of a specially formatted message or by the user creating the message manually. When an incoming message is received which is also being monitored by the trigger and data is contained in the incoming message which forces the trigger to activate then an alarm and/or alert message will be generated.

  The trigger message can be sent to either a per- sonal or maildrop address. The trigger message can act upon either personal or maildrop addresses. This allows incoming messages to be automatically scanned for a set of data which crosses predeter- mined thresholds and alert the user accordingly.

  This feature allows the user the ability to monitor regularly changing values contained in maildrop messages. This is accomplished by sending personal messages to the pager, constructed in a unique fashion.

The incoming messages which can be triggered upon must be of a fixed format:
