The invention relates to a distributive lighting system for automotive head lighting providing a combined high and low beam. In distributive light systems an optical component (e.g. lens or reflector) generates an image of the outlet section of a light guide forming the respective beam pattern. According to the invention, it is proposed to provide a mirror that can be positioned below or above (depending on the used optical system) the light outlet of the distributed light system. For a low beam pattern the mirror is switched 'off' and the full light output of the outlet is still available generating an image below the cutoff of a beam pattern. For the high beam mode the mirror is switched 'on' so that some light of the outlet is redirected above the cutoff, and thus providing a high beam pattern.

What was known?
Up to now, halogen headlamp systems are toggled between low and high beam either by switching on different lamps (two single filament lamps in two reflectors) or different filaments using a two-filament bulb like H4 (HB2). Today also Xenon systems enter the market where the switching is done by moving the Xenon bulb, the reflector or part of it or a bulb shield (in reflection systems), or the cut-off shield (in projection systems) from low to high beam position. When the same light source for high and low beam is used in distributed lighting systems, the switching can be done by shutting the high beam during low beam operation or by coupling light into different guides. Also optical switches can be used to redistribute the light. These solutions have some drawbacks. If a shutter is used to block the high beam during low beam operation, this light is not available for the low beam.
