Abstract

This paper describes improvements in the usage of trunking systems. Existing trunking systems have control and traffic channels. Control channels are used to set-up communication paths for the various users and are occasionally used for short message telegrams, such as emergency transmissions. Very often users are interested in some additional information related to their particular area which may impact their activities, such as traftic load, road constructions, weather, etc. The local character of the trunking system's control channel makes it very useful to add this kind of information for the user's benefit.

COMMON INFORMATION SYSTEM ENHANCEMENT ON TRUNKING SYSTEMS

by Riidiger Maurer

INTRODUCTION

This paper describes improvements in the usage of trunking systems.

PROBLEM(S) TO BE SOLVED

Existing trunking systems have control and traffic channels. Control channels are used to set-up communication paths for the various users and are occasionally used for short message telegrams, such as emergency transmissions. Very often users are interested in some additional information related to their particular area which may impact their activities, such as traftic load, road constructions, weather, etc. The local character of the trunking system's control channel makes it very useful to add this kind of information for the user's benefit.

PROPOSED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM(S)

It is proposed that in addition to the communi- cation protocol of the trunking control channel, specific common information is transmitted. Due to the fact that this information is not time critical, it can be transmitted during the slack time of the control channel. Information can be divided into sections and transmitted in small packages whereby

each package could be assigned with a label of the contents of the information.

Information packages could be divided into following groups:

Label 1: Position n: Information type 1: Label 2: Position n: Information type 2:

Label 3: Position n: Information type 3: Label n: Position n: Information type n:

Label: The 'Label' is a short data message which is unique to the transferred information content, but global for the trunking data system provider.

Position: This information is divided into small subgroups to allow minimum distortion of the control channel. 'Positio...
