ESTABLISHING A CONNECTION OVER A LINK OF UNKNOWN VARIABLE SIZE

CURRENT iDEN CELL SITE LINK

Currently, iDEN Cell Sites connect to the rest of One DSO is dedicated for Telephone Call the iDEN infrastructure over a TI or El span. The Control messages.

Span is segmented into separate functional blocks as depicted in Figure 1.

One DSO is dedicated for Network Management traffic. SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) messages and File Transfer messages travel in this DSO.

A group of DSOs, whose number depends on the number of Frequencies supported at the CellSite, is dedicated to Dispatch Services. Call Control and Voice messages are carried in this group of DSOs over the Frame Relay protocol.

A final set of DSOs, whose number depends on the number of Frequencies supported at the CellSite, is dedicated for Telephone Voice. Voice messages are carried in subrated circuits on these DSOs.

PLANS FOR CHANGING CELL SITE LINK

For various reasons, iDEN plans to evolve to a Cell Site Link in which all functional blocks are combined and carried over one packet based group of DSOs. One motivation is increased efficiency. For instance, duplicate sets of DSOs are used to

carry the Dispatch and Telephone Voice. It is more efficient to allocate one set and to route the voice over that set whether it is for Dispatch or Telephone. The Link would simplify to that depicted in Figure 2.
