Abstract

Currently the Short Message Service Center (SMSC) acts as a store and forward machine for short messages. It can accept messages from various applications using different protocols (e.g. TAP, SMPP CDMP, DTMF etc). The market studies in GSM and iDEN shows more then 90% of these messages are initiated by the voice mail system SMSC also acts as the Gateway Mobile Switching Center (GMSC) for short messages. The GMSC requires Mobile Application Part (MAP) over SS7. GMSC communicates with the Home Location Register (HLR) for routing information, and it also communicates with the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) for delivering the short message.

BACKGROUND

Currently the Short Message Service Center (SMSC) acts as a store and forward machine for short messages. It can accept messages from various applications using different protocols (e.g. TAP, SMPP CDMP, DTMF etc). The market studies in GSM and iDEN shows more then 90% of these messages are initiated by the voice mail system

SMSC also acts as the Gateway Mobile Switching Center (GMSC) for short messages. The GMSC requires Mobile Application Part (MAP) over SS7. GMSC communicates with the Home Location Register (HLR) for routing information, and it also communicates with the Mobile Switching Center (MSC) for delivering the short message.

All MSC have the GMSC built in them. The current MSC does not provide gateway functionality for the short message services. All MSCs are MAP compliant.

INVENTION

The invention will split the functionality of the SMSC into Service Center (SC) and Gateway Mobile Switching Center (GMSC). The SC will reside in the voice mail system and will provide message storage and retry functionality. The GMSC portion of the SMSC will be moved to MSC. Thus MSC will be required to provide GMSC capability for short messages.

The voice mail system will be connected directly to the MSC. SMPP (Short Message Peer to Peer) or Cellular Digital Messaging Protocol (CDMP) will be used by the voice mail system to forward short messag...
