Abstract

  This article describes a new structure for a dou- ble layer liquid crystal display (LCD). Such a new structure enables the double layer LCD to:

* increase its effective display area; * enhance multiple display color and images; * enhance grey scaling by overlapping images; * improve display resolution; and
* simplify interconnecting with integrated circuit (IC) drivers as a result of having wider traces pitch.

  The double layer LCD is created by combining multiple layers of LCD substrate (glass substrates are most commonly used). Figure I below shows a sectional view of the double layer LCD. Layout of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes in each of the

layers can be of different patterns and electrical driving characteristics. The liquid crystal layers are filled with a shared substrate. Each of the layers can independently operate with a respective driving circuitry and, therefore, overlapping images can be created.

Potential applications of the double layer LCD include:

combining two full graphic LCD displays on one surface;
combining TN, STN or other types of LCDs. creating multiple colour display through combination of layers with colour selective polarizers, coloured filters, coloured back- lighting or voltage controlled color LCD.
