Abstract

Recent advances in digital communications have enabled integration of multiple services in one sys- tem. Motorola's iDEN (Integrated Dispatch Enhanced Network) has combined a dispatch ser- vice, traditionally a realm of two-way radio systems, and a mobile-phone cellular-based unit into an ali- in-one digital communication system. The dispatch services include a single-button private call, group call, call alert, and emergency call. The cellular side (a.k.a. interconnect) provides mobile telephone ser- vice plus capabilities such as call-waiting, facsimile, voice mail, alphanumeric short message service and a more recent service for packetized data transmis- sion.

subscriber can start the VM request to a preassigned group easily and quickly; b) a subscriber is able to setup dynamically a VM group by editing phone numbers (existing or new) in the radio; c) a protocol is defined between SU and VPS to allow an origi- nating SU to send the VM group information (i.e. list of phone numbers) to the VPS; d) a login proce- dure is defined for target subscribers to retrieve the VM message at VPS and be authenticated upon login into VPS.

INTRODUCTION

  Recent advances in digital communications have enabled integration of multiple services in one sys- tem. Motorola's iDEN (Integrated Dispatch Enhanced Network) has combined a dispatch ser- vice, traditionally a realm of two-way radio systems, and a mobile-phone cellular-based unit into an ali- in-one digital communication system. The dispatch services include a single-button private call, group call, call alert, and emergency call. The cellular side
(a.k.a. interconnect) provides mobile telephone ser- vice plus capabilities such as call-waiting, facsimile, voice mail, alphanumeric short message service and a more recent service for packetized data transmis- sion.

  An area for potential enhancement is a dispatch voice mail service. In the wireline voice mail (VM) approach, VM groups are predefined and stored in the Voice Processor System (VPS) and a user selects a VM group during call setup. This procedure, with potential delays associated with service access and group manipulation, would be undesirable as dis- patch-style service enhancement proposed here. The purpose of this paper is to describe a means to pro- vide a fast and flexible Group Voice Mail service to iDEN dispatch subscribers.

  The proposed solution can be summarized as follows: a) the group VM service is implemented ergonomically in the radio so that an originating

DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION

A. Call Setup A subscriber (MS) selects a voice mail group associ- ated with a list of phone numbers and initiates a group Voice Mail (VM) call from a predefined mode on the radio. The call can be setup following the same procedure as conventional Mobile-to-Landline interconnect call. The new service type (i.e.group VM) is indicated to the FNE in the CM-Service-Request message and the VM group information (i.e. list of phone numbers) is sent to the Voice Processor System (VP5 by the originating MS in User-Information message. After the call is con-

nected to the VPS, the MS can talk for a config- urable period defined as GVM-Timer. After the call is finished, the VPS duplicates the voice message into the associated mail boxes which the MS speci- fied in the User-to-user IE in the User Information message. Call setup is illustrated in Figure 1.
