  Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are conventionally connected to a flexible circuit (flex) using ZIF connec- tors. Proposed here is a new method for connecting a flex to a PCB.

  In this method, conductive strips on one side of a flex are exposed for mounting onto a stiffener. The stiffener is made of, for example, Ultem material to withstand high temperature and high pressure during mounting. As shown in Figure 1, the stiffener fits a tool used for the mounting. The flex, when mounted to the stiffener, forms a flex connector as shown in the top half of Figure 2.

  The flex connector is then inserted into a slot made on the PCB. Such a slot is made by, for example, rout- ing the PCB to thereby cut plated through holes into

halves as shown in the bottom half of Figure 2. The width of the slot and the thickness of the flex connector must be the same as shown in Figure 3 to ensure good conductive connections. The pitch of the plated through holes of the slot and the pitch of conductive strips of the flex connector is also very critical to pre- vent overlaps which can cause conductive shortings.

  The flex connector is wedge shaped to allow prop- er connection between the conductive strips and the plated through holes. Both ends of the stiffener taper laterally to retain the flex connector within the slot.
