Abstract

The application of wireless technology as a solution for business problems is becoming more prevalent as the number of wireless public carriers is dramatically increasing. One solution, "dispatch" or as the public carriers call it "workgroup communi- cation" is being used more frequently by small busi- nesses with employees who travel as part of their job function. As the users of this type of communi- cation have migrated from large public safety agen- cies to small businesses, the size of the "talkgroup" has dramatically decreased.

  The application of wireless technology as a solution for business problems is becoming more prevalent as the number of wireless public carriers is dramatically increasing. One solution, "dispatch" or as the public carriers call it "workgroup communi- cation" is being used more frequently by small busi- nesses with employees who travel as part of their job function. As the users of this type of communi- cation have migrated from large public safety agen- cies to small businesses, the size of the "talkgroup" has dramatically decreased.

  Decreasing the talkgroup size increases the probability that no other users will be affiliated with the currently selected talkgroup. Currently, a user does not have any indication whether or not other members of his/her talkgroup are affiliated. The only way to find out if another user is affiliated to your currently selected talkgroup is to push the "PTT" button and wait for either a "Talk Permit" tone or a "Target Not Available" tone, as supported in the Motorola IDEN system. (Motorola SmartNet, SmartZone, and OmniLink systems do not have the "Target Not Available" tone.)
