ABSTRACT

  A communications receiver is designed for use in a noisy environment. Circuitry is provided to decide whether the ambient noise level at a user's location is too high for a caller to speak to the user. If so, the caller can leave a voice-mail message for the user.

INTRODUCTION

  This paper describes improvements in commu- nication systems for people working in noisy envi- ronments.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED

  It is difficult to alert a user of a communications system who is working in a noisy environment, such as close to machines or aircraft, to the arrival of an incoming call. This can be done, for example, by a vibration alert. However, this only suffices to inform the user of the existence of an incoming call. The user still may not be able to understand part or all of a spoken communication due to high ambient noise at the location concerned. Spoken communi- cations may therefore actually be lost while using a standard receiver in a noisy environment, especially if the user is carrying noise abatement equipment.

To cure this problem: the radio receiver will be modified in the following/way:
