ABSTRACT SOLUTION

  Add insulator strips to positive battery contacts to prevent circuitry and/or battery damage when a battery is inserted backwards. Only the positive bat- tery end can touch to the battery contact between the insulating strips.

BACKGROUND

  Circuitry can be damaged if current is applied in the opposite direction intended. Additional compo- nents (such as diodes) are required to prevent circuit damage. With the diode protected circuit, a back- ward inserted battery loses current and potentially damages the battery. Consumers and polarity mark- ings alone will not prevent the inevitable insertion of a battery backwards.

  A battery's positive end diameter is smaller than a battery's negative end diameter. By adding non- conducting vertical strips to the positive battery con- tact a slot is created. The slot width allows only the positive end diameter to touch the contact and com- plete the circuit. See Figure 2.

  If the battery is inserted backwards, the larger negative end diameter will mate to the nonconduct- ing strips maintaining an open circuit. See Figure 3.

BENEFITS

  Existing products could be upgraded using the positive contact reverse current protector. This upgrade is a retrofit to existing leaf spring or flat plate positive battery contacts. Use of the contacts will eliminate components used to protect circuitry and prevent dama...
