ABSTRACT

This paper describes a solution to reach a cellu- lar-phone user in areas where the use of a celhtlar- phone is not permitted or not possible due to insufft- cient coverage.

INTRODUCTION

This paper deals with the combination of two technologies in one communication unit to enable permanent availability, which is essential for exam- ple for service providers, craftsmen to receive orders, maintenance persons, etc.

PROBLEM(S) TO BE SOLVED

Especially in areas and buildings, where the use of cellular-phones is not permitted or tolerated (Planes, Hospitals, Theaters, Restaurants etc.) or within coverage holes, the users of those phones may miss important calls. The idea outlined below will cure this problem.

PROPOSED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM(S)

The user has a cellular phone with a built-in pager. This pager shares the display and keypad with the cellular phone. It can also download

received phone numbers into the cellular phone's dial memory.

The cellular service provider has a process that can automatically transm+ a page call to the user's pager (built-m into the ceRular phone) whenever the cellular phone cannot be reached or a call is not answered. So, a user who, has turned off his cellular phone for some reason or:has lost contact to the cel- lular controller, will nevertheless be alerted when someone is trying to reach him.
