BACKGROUND

  In current mobile subscriber (MS), the lock fea- ture allows certain features and buttons of the phone to be disabled until the correct passcode is entered. The lock feature can be enabled either manually or automatically. The automatic lock involves the phone entering the locked state on power up.

  One important feature that is disabled when the phone is in the locked state is the ability to receive calls. The lack of this ability may cause the user to hesitate to put the phone in the locked state since the ability to receive calls is an important feature of the MS.

  When a user wants to leave their MS powered on but it remains idle for long periods of time, they currently do not have the ability to lock out the functionality of the MS after a certain amount of time. This brings about security issues with the MS if the phone is powered on then lost. An unautho- rized user can use the phone if the phone is not in the locked state.

SOLUTION

  A timer can be added to the lock feature of the MS to lock the MS when the timer has expired. The timer is started once the user enables the lock fea- ture. Once the timer expires the MS enters the locked state and waits for the correct passcode to be entered.
