Abstract

An iDEN subscriber unit currently has an Alert feature whereby a user can set another user's unit to continuously ring to get his/her attention. The prob- lem with this feature is that the Alert continues until either the battery on the unit dies or the user hears it and turns it off. There is no feature for the calling party to switch off the alert, say after a couple of minutes when it is evident that the party they are alerting is not near their unit.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

An iDEN subscriber unit currently has an Alert feature whereby a user can set another user's unit to continuously ring to get his/her attention. The prob- lem with this feature is that the Alert continues until either the battery on the unit dies or the user hears it and turns it off. There is no feature for the calling party to switch off the alert, say after a couple of minutes when it is evident that the party they are alerting is not near their unit.

PROBLEM SOLUTION

This invention is aimed at equipping the sub- scriber units with the ability to Cancel an Alert after it has been sent. Once the Alert has been sent and the calling unit receives a "Alert Sent Successful", the calling unit after a set timer expiration, queires the called unit via the DAP to determine whether the called unit is still in Alert mode. The caller then is provided with a choice to cancel or clear the Alert. When the Cancel Alert button is pressed, the DAP is notified and sends the called unit a Clear Alert mes- sage which clears the Alert though it lets the user of the called unit know that he/she has been alerted.
