INTRODUCTION

  This paper describes improvements in 'Hands Free' simplex operation for both mobile and portable radios in vehicle adapters.

Duplex operation can easily be provided with

little manual intervention (as with a cellular phone) but with simplex operation we must provide a reli- able radio PIT function without significant driver intervention.

  Steering wheel or foot switches require activa- tion all the time the driver wishes to speak. This is 'not very hands free' operation, and reduces control of the vehicle. Voice operated transmission (VOX) circuits are subject to false operation by extraneous noise. This gives rise to poor radio system perfor- mance due to unwanted transmissions.

PROPOSED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM(S)

  The operation of a steering wheel or other switch easily accessible by the vehicle driver is

combined with a VOX. By doing this, performance, reliability of operation' and ease of use can be improved considerably. ~
