PROBLEM

  Touch Screens have become the standard input device for Personal Digital Assistants (PDA). Presently, there is no way to automate the input of data to touch screens. When PDA users meet, they have into scribble each other's names and phone numbers into their touch screens.

SOLUTION ABSTRACT

  The solution is to emboss coded information on a card, place the card on the touch screen, and then rub the back of the card to transfer the code onto the touch screen. A software program resident on the PDA translates the code into ASCII.

SOLUTION DETAILS

  One limitation of touch screens is they can only record information at one point at a time. In order to transfer a line of characters, the code characters must be linear, i.e. a set of dots and dashes which would amount to a straight line with interspersed blank spaces. The linear code, arranged in a series

of lines, could be transferred by rubbing one by one along the lines in a straight motion.

  The code could consist of four possible charac- ters: dot, short dash, long dash, or nothing at all. Each space would have four possibilities, so a series of 4 characters could represent 256 different letters, numbers and symbols, more than adequate for ASCII codes plus specialized symbols.
