  Although one-way paging is typically a reliable form of communication, there is still a possibility of missing pages. Since paging is looked upon by most as an extremely reliable form of communica- tion, it is often used as a supplement to devices such as cell phones just for the additional reliability.

  Algorithms are available today to detect missed pages. They often rely on sequence tags to indicate that an earlier message was missed. As a result, the user is not informed of a missed page until a follow- ing page is received. It may be hours or days for another page to even be sent; and when the user is in a bad coverage area, any following page may not be received either.

  One method of circumventing the possibility of long periods before an indication of a missed page is provided is to send periodically summary pages. Such summary pages would act as a heartbeat, indi- cating the pager is in good contact with the paging infrastructure. This is accomplished by having the pager and the paging infrastructure scheduled to communicate at exact times (or possibly exact FLEX frames) in which the summary pages are peri- odically sent. The summary pages can contain the IDS of all the pages previously sent, or can provide a no page indicator when no pages were sent. The ID
