Abstract:

In this document we propose a scheme that enable routers to auto-configure this delay. Specifically it results in a zero delay response to a router solicitation.

Problem:

According to IPv6 standards, when there is a router solicitation, router advertisements will be sent after a random delay of up to 500ms. This delay is not an issue with static hosts that typically need to send a router solicitation on boot-up. This however causes performance degradation with hosts using mobile IP.  Specifically it hinders with seamless mobility by adding significant delay during handoff. When a node handoffs to a new access point in has to either wait for an unsolicited router advertisement or request an advertisement by sending a router solicitation. But if routers take on an average 250ms to respond, the delay in configuring a new address leads to significant reduction in performance viz. packet loss, delay during handoffs.

One solution to address this problem is to set the delay to 0. In this case if there is more than one router, for every solicitation there will be a number of responses that will waste scarce wireless resources. Another solution is to set the random interval a smaller value, say 25ms. However, it may still add delays of the order of 10s of ms. The proposed solution eliminates any additional delay.
