Method for a torque-sensitive load application for a heatsink clip

Disclosed is a method for a torque-sensitive load application for a heatsink clip. Benefits include improved design flexibility and improved ease of manufacturing.

Background

The conventional installation of a heatsink spring clip and applying a load for various board thickness, load, and design requirements is problematic. The conventional heatsink attach method (such as a spring clip) does not utilize a load adjusting screw to apply the load to the heatsink. A specific clip is required for each design load and board thickness. Special tooling may be required to install the state-of-the-art clip designs.

General description

The disclosed method is a specialized metal spring clip to attach a heatsink to the package and board. The clip is designed with an adjustment screw, which is used to apply load during installation. The load applied by the clip is proportional to the torque applied to the adjusting screw.

Advantages

The disclosed method provides advantages, including:

·        Improved design flexibility due to single clip design that provides a range of loads as required

·        Improved design flexibility due to accommodating a wide range of board thickness and variation in dimensional stack-up (tolerance of the board, package, thermal interface material, and heatsink)

·        Improved ease of manufacturing due to easily meeting ergonomic requirements for installation force and tool oper...
