ABSTRACT

This paper describes a tool that was implement- ed on the IRIDIUM@ program to demate Gilbert connectors. The tool solved the problem of demat- ing connectors.

PROBLEM

The problem we encountered was that there were no reliable tools available through the manu- facturer to demate cables with Gilbert connectors. When trying to demate these cables with the manu- factures tool you couldn't remove the cable without putting a heavy side load on them, with the poten- tial of damaging both connectors along with the cen- ter pin and dielectric.

SOLUTION

Our solution to the problem was the Gilbert con- nector removal tool. This tool allows us to demate the male and female connectors without putting any side load on the connectors.

OPERATION

The tool works by inserting the tool in-between

the male and female connectors and then tilting the tool backwards, demating the connection.
