ABSTRACT

  In many instances there is a need for a keyed or self-aligning connector with the added ability to be disconnected easily. This invention solves both needs.

PROBLEM

  Various environments place special require- ments on connectors for audio equipment and other types of electronic equipment. For example, in race cars, connectors between a racing helmet and the car must withstand the vibration of the vehicle at high speeds, but must be able to be quickly removed in case of an accident.

  Many devices on fue trucks have batteries that require charging. When the fire truck returns to the station, the battery charger is plugged into the wall. Fire engine drivers leaving the station in a hurry may not remember to disconnect the charger. Certain applications require very low profile con- nections due to space constraints, such as in com- puters or computer peripherals. All of these applica- tions would benefit from a low profile, quick-dis- connect, keyed, reliable connector.

SOLUTION

  The invention proposes use of magnets with high magnetic fields, as an interlocking and align- ment mechanism to insure positive connection while still allowing quick disconnect.

  By arranging the magnets on each mating device with an opposite pattern of north and south poles on each mating end of the connector, the pieces will only connect when the north and south poles match on each side.
