Abstract

A carpet has a (partially) subjective quality of hand, which is a measure of the apparent value of the carpet and fiber. One component of hand is the perceived softness of the carpet. For a carpet, and most especially a cut pile saxony and cut pile modified frieze, it has been discovered that the softness of the carpets, as determined by a panel of human evaluators, is a function of the number of filaments in a standardized area, the bulk of the fiber (as measured by the length retraction due to crimp and twist in the filaments), the denier per filament (dpf), the modification ratio, the fiber modulus, and the pile height.

                        A carpet has a (partially) subjective quality of hand, which is a measure of the apparent value of the carpet and fiber.  One component of hand is the perceived softness of the carpet.  For a carpet, and most especially a cut pile saxony and cut pile modified frieze, it has been discovered that the softness of the carpets, as determined by a panel of human evaluators, is a function of the number of filaments in a standardized area, the bulk of the fiber (as measured by the length retraction due to crimp and twist in the filaments), the denier per filament (dpf), the modification ratio, the fiber modulus, and the pile height.

                        It was also found that an effective dpf was a more important variable in determining softness than the average dpf.  The effective dpf was evaluated from the diameter at the 2 percentile number-based ranking in a fiber cross-section.  This alternate dpf can correct for the effect of denier variations in the fiber.
