ABSTRACT

Filling pressure of self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is told the user via voice which is stored in a voice storage option of a portable twoway-radio.

INTRODUCTION

This paper describes improvements in the field of SCBA usage for firemen or other workers which have to use breathing units with limited usage length.

PROBLEM(S) TO BE SOLVED

Normally a SCBA has an analog or digital pressure meter which shows the user the air pressure that is left to use. For firemen it is difficult in some cases to read this pressure for example if there is much smoke of a fIre around, in the darkness or if the SCBA is worn under some protection clothing against aggressive chemicals. life of the user of the SCBA that he always knows the pressure of the air which is left.

PROPOSED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM(S)

Newer SCBA already have a digital pressure display. It is possible to build a port into this unit to connect a line to a two-way-radio. Then the actual pressure, which is transmitted to the unit as an analog or digital value, is checked and at some predefined levels or at predefined time intervals the user is told about the pressure by the radio which activates predefined messages that are stored in the voice storage option.
