Disclosed is a method for laptop mouse pad user presence detection. Benefits include improved power performance.

Description

              The disclosed method extends the laptop touch-pad function beyond pointer movement to user-presence notification (see Figures 1 and 2). The capacitive motion detection can be extended to convey the existence of moving or nonmoving capacitive action to indicate the presence of the user’s hand(s). This information can be used by power management (PM) schemes to provide user-presence information. This information can be used to blank the screen, lowering power usage. A user may select a PM mode where the screen is lit or brightest when the user’s hands are near/on the pad or have been within a specified time.

              The disclosed method provides advantages, including:

•             Improved power management of the relatively high-power LCD display

•             Improved cost effectiveness due to being a low-cost solution
