Abstract

This feature eliminates the inconvenience of writing down or remembering a phone number when calling directory assistance on a wireless PCS phone. Instead, directory assistance pushes the number directly to the phone book in the user's handset. One particularly important use case is when the user must drive and talk on the phone: this automatic entry is not only convenient, but can keep a driver's hands on the wheel and attention on the road.

PHONE BOOK AUTO-ENTRY BY DIRECTORY ASSISTANCE IN PCS HANDSET

by David Taubenheim

This feature eliminates the inconvenience of writing down or remembering a phone number when calling directory assistance on a wireless PCS phone. Instead, directory assistance pushes the number directly to the phone book in the user's handset. One particularly important use case is when the user must drive and talk on the phone: this automatic entry is not only convenient, but can keep a driver's hands on the wheel and attention on the road.

When the user connects to directory assistance and requests a phone number, the user's mobile phone number or identification is used to access a database which tells the directory assistance operator whether the user's handset is equipped with the auto-add feature and if the feature is enabled. If so, the user's phone book receives pertinent directory information, for instance name. phone number, address, etc. When the handset is capable, but the user has disabled the feature, the directory assistance operator confirms whether the number should be added to the handset's phone book.

The user has the option of being connected automatically by the handset once the info is updated in the handset's phone book. (That is, after hanging up with directory assistance, the phone dials the new number.) Otherwise, the directory assistance opera~ tor gives the user the option of being transferred to the requested phone number. The implications of either phone dialing the number or the operator transferring the connection could affect billing.
