General description

              The disclosed method enables users who otherwise would miss potentially important airport announcements to:

•             Receive all announcements

•             Only receive the announcements they are interested in (although the airport could decide to always send security announcements)

•             Receive announcements in a language they can understand best and which typically is not one of the languages used at a given airport

•             Play back the announcements

Detailed description

              The components of the disclosed method include an airport announcer service for WLAN-based mobile devices (see Figure 1).

              Using a protocol like universal plug-n-play (UPnP), mobile devices search for the service when the user wants to listen to the announcements but are distracted by other activity like watching a movie on a laptop or listening to the music with headphones.

              When a search request is received, the announcer service sends a reply with the detailed description of the service, which could include such features as voice announcements, text announcements, and voice/text announcements in different languages.
