Method for using the current draw in a chipset to detect RAM

Disclosed is a method for using the current draw in a chipset to detect RAM.  Benefits include improved (aka reduced) boot time.

Background

Memory detection and configuration is time consuming and complicated, especially considering the different memory configurations that can be used at the same time, including serial presence detect (SPD) memory and non-SPD memory. Conventionally, time-consuming SMBUS commands must be used to get memory configuration information from SPD memory. When non-SPD memory is used, the chipset must use trial and error methods to find out if memory is present by programming chipset registers in a methodical way.

Description

The disclosed method detects the memory configuration. The memory controller chipset uses some means, such as current draw or voltage feedback presence, to detect the configuration and sets a bit in a register to indicate which memory slots are populated (see Figure 1). The BIOS can quickly read the register to determine which slots actually have memory installed.

An alternative approach is to enable BIOS to initiate the current-sensing operation at will via some programmatic mechanism/bit setting, rather than forcing the memory controller hub to perform the detection during its reset sequence.

Advantages

Some implementations of the disclosed structure and method provide one or more of the following advantages:
