Abstract

A flame retardant (halogen and antimony free) thermoset epoxy adhesive has been developed which meets the requirements of FAR. 25.853 b for flame retardancy with outstanding mechanical performance as a structural adhesive. The epoxy adhesive comprises an aromatic epoxy resin and an intumescent ammonium polyphosphate such as Exolite™ AP 423 brand flame retardant from Clariant Corporation. The epoxy adhesive may be one or two part and in the form of a liquid, paste, or film and may contain carbon or glass fibers. The ammonium polyphosphate was used in a two-part formulation epoxy adhesive formulation at levels of 9.5 % and 10.7% by weight of the total adhesive composition and was blended in either one or both parts of the two-part formulation.
