        � � � � � Several conventional ways to create nonhermetic packages exist, but they do not create the fine-leak package systematically.

Description

        � � � � � The disclosed method is a manufacturing process to create a controlled leak rate, pigtailed package. To create a nonhermetic package, a gold or metallization layer on the top of a fiber feedthrough is removed using a laser (see Figure 1). The amount of metallization removal determines the leak rate. The disclosed method creates the nonhermetic package for the leak-rate measurement using conventional helium absorption or a digital holographic technique. As the pigtailed optical package becomes smaller, conventional helium absorption becomes more difficult to implement. The digital holographic technique requires a reliable source to serve as the standard to correlate the leak rate efficiently with package displacement.
