Background

              Several conventional ways to create nonhermetic packages exist, but they do not create the fine-leak package systematically.

Description

              The disclosed method is a manufacturing process to create a controlled leak rate, pigtailed package. To create a nonhermetic package, a gold or metallization layer on the top of a fiber feedthrough is removed using a laser (see Figure 1). The amount of metallization removal determines the leak rate. The disclosed method creates the nonhermetic package for the leak-rate measurement using conventional helium absorption or a digital holographic technique. As the pigtailed optical package becomes smaller, conventional helium absorption becomes more difficult to implement. The digital holographic technique requires a reliable source to serve as the standard to correlate the leak rate efficiently with package displacement.

              The disclosed method has been demonstrated using

six optic modules with metallization removal by laser.
