Latch design for rattle noise reduction

Inertial latch mechanism is adopted for the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) as actuator lock

mechanism against the shock. Basically, inertial latch mechanism has two parts, one is

"long lever"and another part is "short bar". Long lever is attached long lever pivot,

and short bar is also attached short bar pivot. (See Fig-1) Long lever and short bar

is free to move upwards and downwards. So, if vibration is applied to HDD upwards

and downwards, long lever contacts Top cover(=outside cover of HDD) and short bar.

This is main cause of rattle noise during vibration. (See Fig-2)

Disclosed is the method to avoid long lever contacting with top cover/short bar

directly. Following three methods are considered to avoid long lever contacting

with top cover and short bar.

1. Elastomer is attached with long lever to avoid tip of long lever contacting with

top cover/short bar directly. (See Fig-3A)

2. Plstic cap (or elastomer) is attched with pivot for long lever to restrain movement

of long lever upwards. (See Fig-3B)

3. Circular protrusion of inner hole of plastic holder and slot of pivot for long lever

is made to restrain movement of long lever upwards. (See Fig-3C)
