Method for audio extensions to the JPEG file format

Disclosed is a method for audio extensions to the JPEG file format. Benefits include improved functionality.

Background

One of the more popular uses of PCs is digital photography. Sending digital images to others via email is also a popular use.

When sending digital images to others over the Internet, users must type in whatever information they want to send along with the images, which is sometimes inconvenient. For example, the sender might want to indicate who is in the picture or when it was taken.

A better method would be to give people the ability to conveniently add a small voice recording to the image. Unfortunately, this capability would require recording the voice, saving it to a file, and attaching the voice file to the same email as the image. Even this is not ideal as the recipient of the image would need to be aware of the audio file’s presence, know that it is related to the given image, and open it at the same time with the required program. Receiving an email with 10 images and 10 audio files attached and associating the audio file with the correct photographic file is practically impossible.

General description

The disclosed method incorporates the audio data and image data into a single file. The method also uses the JPEG file format so that applications unaware of the audio capability can read and display the image data.
