Abstract

The feature solves an issue related to the use of an e-mail program's "Reply with History" functionality. It identifies and removes redundant e-mails, i.e. mails which are contained in other e-mails either as attachment or as e-mail history. Redundant e-mails may be removed from the mail database resulting in non-redundant and concise e-mail stores. The advantages of the feature are shown in an example.

Optimized handling of e-mail historie

Disclosed is a feature for e-mail programs that identifies and removes redundant e-mails resulting in non-redundant and concise e-mail stores.

The feature solves an issue related to the use of an e-mail program's "Reply with History" functionality. To illustrate the problem, we consider the following scenario: User A writes an e-mail (identified by e.1) to user B, copying user C. User B replies by sending an e-mail (identified by e.2) which contains e.1 as attachment and copying user C. The e-mail stores of the users A, B and C contain the e-mails,
e.1 and e.2. Since e.1 is contained in e.2, e.1 is redundant.

We propose the following concept in order to identify and remove redundant e-mails:

A user who utilizes "Reply with History" automatically receives a copy of the

e-mail. An e-mail which is sent through "Reply with History" is assigned a reply id. The

reply id may be created from the e-mail's subject and an additional Suffix x, x being an indicator: x=1 if the attached e-mail is changed and x=0 if the attached e-mail is not changed. When an e-mail is received, prior e-mails are redundant if they are contained as

attachment to the newly received e-mail and the indicator in the reply id is 0. Redundant e-mails may be removed from the user's e-mail store.
