An optimization method for the observation interval of file system usage

In a Network Attached Storage (NAS), notifications are sent out when the utilization of the file system exceeds a specified threshold.

Sending out notifications is usually triggered by observing the utilization of the file system periodically, and comparing the utilization with the threshold.

In polling method, an interval need to be carefully determined so that too large interval should not delay notifications too long after the threshold is exceeded, and too small interval should not waste CPU cycles for observing the utilization, whose value turns out to be less than the threshold, and need not be observed. This invention selects the optimal interval after which the utilization is to be observed next so that the notifications may be sent out as soon as the utilization exceeds the threshold and the CPU cycles may not be wasted.

This method determines the time to observe the utilization next dynamically based on
1) Estimation of rate of change of the utilization, based on the values of the utilization at the previous two observations,
2) Estimation of the interval after which the utilization may exceed the threshold if the utilization is changing as estimated by the step 1),
3) Default observation intervals (minimum and maximum)

Default minimum observation interval is used to prevent repeated observations in succession.
